09 Is there a guaranteed route to your creativity?
Remember times when you’ve been motivated in your life: how do you find that same spark?
Firstly, this post was nearly titled ‘I have a confession’ with regards to not writing anything throughout August, but it turns out the difference of just a few days gives reason to scrap an entire post a change it into the complete opposite!
This month has been quieter on the work front, but busier with birthdays, spending time with family, reading, exploring Yorkshire and life admin. However, in just the last week I’ve managed over 1300 words!
This writing boost was sparked after my recent walks and choice of music. I’ve opted for this fantasy reading playlist; I’ve listened to it multiple times in the depths of cold, cosy winter nights, but recently I got back home and just had to write all these new ideas down for my fantasy series…. 1,000 words later, I had a little more energy and over the next few days, it prompted me to add more to my crime novel.
I felt lighter. Joyous. Proud.
In fact, a forgotten album popped up whilst I was working which reminds me of my commute between university and home during my second year (a horrid time ngl), which started the idea for my novel! (oh, how I wish I started writing it sooner!).
Even planning this post, it was all done by going back to basics, fuelled by pen and paper – 0 distractions, just me, my mind and the pen. Before I knew it, I’d written an entire page (it was quite spooky actually).
There can be days, or even weeks, where you’re unmotivated – trust me, I get it. It’s very easy to get distracted when doing something, or just find it completely draining to even get started.
Think back to times of great productivity (and better weather): what gets your creative energy flowing? For me, that’s writing. I get energy from it. Some extroverts get it from mingling with other people, but I find it very draining.
The blinker on the screen, or a pen and paper is enough for me. Recently, I rediscovered a weekly planner that kept me accountable for tasks to be completed: repeating that now, highlighting each one makes me feel in control as the page turns into a rainbow of colour. Productivity = ^^^
Any thoughts you have, just write them down. Or ‘brain/mind vom’ as I like to call it. Then you can organise it all later.
The right music, pen and paper. That’s my guaranteed route to creativity.
What sparks yours?
I recently finished Talking at Night by Claire Daverley… this was a very easy 5 stars, perfect if you’re a fan of Normal People, One Day, or Love, Rosie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Currently, I’m rotating between The Children Act by Ian McEwan; Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (re-reading); and Everyone Here is Lying by Shari Lapena.
